Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road has been a thriving, attractive destination in East London since the mid 1800's. Named in honor of the original market's founder, Angela Burdett Coutts, a philanthropist who had also founded a Bishopric in British Columbia, the Flower market began as a Saturday tradition. Eventually shifting to run every Sunday, the market has grown in reputation and now serves a client base that flocks from around the globe. "Everthing a fiver" can be heard coming from each stall, the calls blending in with the local musicians that have also come to claim the market as their ideal busking territory. If you find the array of options overwhelming, with Dutch Tulips, Orchids and every shade of Rose aplenty, you can rest assured you're in good hands with suggestions from any of of the stall owners as several of them have been trading their flowers here for decades. Tucked just off of Columbia Road are a selection of food stalls to cover every Sunday morning craving. From simple croissants and coffee to bacon sandwiches, oysters, and Bloody Marys, visitors are encouraged to refuel and relax. Word to the wise: while the best selection can be found early in the morning, the best flower bargains are to be found towards the close of trading (the market is open 8am until 2pm/3pm-ish) as stall owners look to pack up as little as possible.Show lessRead more
