Claire De Rouen

If David Bailey himself calls a store “the best photography bookshop in the world” you know there must be something special about it. Such was the case with the late Claire de Rouen’s eponymous store, which she founded in 2005. Situated above a bookmaker, the shop isn’t one you could just stumble across, unless you were in the know. And those who are in the know range from fashion and photography students to industry heavyweights such as Bailey and Bruce Weber, as well as general arty-types and enthusiasts. With her striking presence, Egyptian-born de Rouen was something of a Soho legend, championing underground and independent photographers. Her legacy still lives on in the store, with specialist and self-published photography books that one may not find in bigger chains, jostling for shelf space with more mainstream titles, along with special collectors’ editions. The staircase leading down from the store is known as the “Exit Gallery” where customers can admire miniature photography exhibitions on the walls. The store also holds many events such as bigger shows in the independent gallery next door, as well as readings and book signings from with authors.Show lessRead more
