Choosing Keeping

“I thought the idea of shopkeeping would be fun,” says Julia, whose boutique, Choosing Keeping, is a collection of rare, beautiful European, American and Japanese stationery. Equally adept with providing a good sound bite as she is at sourcing some of the finest fountain pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, hole punches and notebooks (the list goes on) we’ve come across, she is clearly passionate about her products. The small store on Columbia Road touts the finer things in stationery. You can expect to find wooden ballpoint pens from Japan, Lamy writing implements from Germany, Fiskar scissors from Finland and a host of products so hard to find in London that you’ll have to visit to hear about them. But be warned, Choosing Keeping isn’t about aesthetics for aesthetics sake - Julia is primarily interested in selling stories through the products that she stocks. “I see stationery as a starting point. These things are to be used, not just looked at. Once you sell a pen it’s powerful because it becomes about that person expressing themselves and creating with it.” Choosing Keeping also keeps a wall for collectible children’s books, buckets of pretty gift-wrap and, at the more random end of the scale, jumbo gluepots. In short, it's a gift-giver’s dream.Show lessRead more
