Brick Lane Bookshop

Navigate your way through the hipster bars and colorful Asian restaurants of Brick Lane and you’ll find the quirky Brick Lane Bookshop tucked in among them. Not one of the many “achingly hip” establishments that Shoreditch has become known for, they are nevertheless over 30 years old and much loved by locals, tourists and authors alike. Starting out under the name That Book, the store began as a charity for The Tower Hamlets Art Projects, working with local schools to assist with education and supplying books. Although the charity no longer exists, the store still works with schools, as well as supports the wider writing community with novel competitions, workshops and organizing talks by authors held at the nearby performing arts venue Rich Mix. A big focus is books on the history of London, and in particular the local area of the East End with its rich history of immigration. They also sell independent, self-published arts magazines and a variety of quirky, literary and London-related gifts that have proven popular with tourists. Other areas of interest are graphic novels, and books in foreign languages to cater to their multicultural clientele. Show lessRead more
