Ben Pentreath Ltd.

When Ben Pentreath founded his eponymously-named store in 2008, the original plan was to use the space as a workshop for his architecture firm. Issues with the local council, however, prevented Pentreath from turning the Rugby St. location into an office, so he made it into a home furnishings store instead. Since then thousands of homes in London and all over the world have benefitted from this act of bureaucratic intervention. Pentreath, who now runs the store together with decorative artist Bridie Hall, focuses on offering an eclectic display of items that you'll have difficulty finding anywhere else. These include furniture from family-run Dutch manufacturers Du Long et du Let, china from Leeds Pottery, a slew of classic antique items (think brass candlesticks), as well as Bridie's own line of scented candles. Ben Pentreath also sells exquisite stationery and postcards with prints ranging in theme from the zoological to the nautical. Many of the items sold here are picked up at auction houses or are sourced from distant lands like Turkey or India, but Ben Pentreath's wares are chosen for their aesthetic appeal, rather than their scarcity. That is why they proudly sell Penguin's Clothbound Classics of world literature. So the next time you find yourself in Bloomsbury, keep an eye out for the Victorian storefront bearing the Ben Pentreath moniker.Show lessRead more
