Basia Zarzycka

You have to ring a bell to get into Basia Zarzycka, but once you have gained access, prepare to be spellbound. The store is a twinkling cavern of endless treasures that Marie Antoinette couldn’t have dreamed up in her wildest fantasies, ranging from jewelry and ornaments, trinkets, accessories, and shoes to baroque furniture. The majority of pieces are handmade by the store’s eponymous owner Basia, who exudes a magical air as if she could suddenly snap her fingers and make the entire shop come to life. She encourages children to play and explore the shop and even has certain displays which are at child height (there tellingly isn’t a single ‘No Touching’ sign to be found). Downstairs is Basia’s workshop where she creates commissioned wedding gowns as well as the many weird and wonderful objects that inhabit the store. She also sources many vintage pieces such as crystal beads that are over 100 years old, clockwork birds that chirp intermittently, and stuffed dead animals. The latter add a slightly macabre edge to the displays, with wide-eyed foxes and ducklings peering out among the jewelry, while a black and white cat nestles in eternal slumber under a chaise longue. The store is a true feast for the eyes and a wonderful tribute to Zarzycka’s imagination - which clearly knows no bounds.Show lessRead more
