B Southgate

The great thing about Columbia Road Flower Market and its unwavering popularity is the range of artisanal businesses it has brought to the area. B Southgate is one of those – the only drawback being that the showroom only opens on Sundays. Established by furniture restorer Ben Southgate in 2003, the shop sells the type of 20th century furniture that seems to have been in fashion for much of the past decade. B Southgate’s range of 1940s French chairs, oak topped dining tables and glass-front bookshelves are impressive in both style and condition - not an easy thing to achieve with vintage furniture. When he’s not debating the ‘hundred year rule’ of vintage versus antique with inquisitive interviewers, Ben is at his East Sussex workshop. It is here that the careful restoration occurs. Back in the shop it’s not just the large pieces that dominate the space. Luminous Victorian pharmacists bottles line the window, industrial lamps hang from the ceiling and you might even spot the odd wooden racing car to play with – antique of course. Or should that be vintage?Show lessRead more
