Altea Gallery

To many, maps may seem like a simple tool to enable you to navigate from point A to point B, but Altea Gallery proves that they are, in fact, a unique way of finding out more about history, society and art. Located in upmarket Mayfair, the store focuses on antique items in particular, with a wide selection of atlases, books, globes and – of course – maps of all shapes and sizes, from miniature charts to large scale plans. An expert in the field, Massimo De Martini set up his business in 1992, later opening his retail space opposite the Sotheby’s building and in the heart of one of London's key antiques districts. Set over two floors, the range of maps on offer is unparalleled, with early printed maps dating back to the fifteenth century and an impressive collection of sea charts, town plans and even celestial charts. Whether you're looking for an investment or perhaps an unusual gift, the knowledgeable staff is well-equipped to advise both connoisseurs and first-time buyers.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide.
