Alex Monroe

Alex Monroe’s jewelery designs are inspired by the romance and whimsy of the countryside where the designer spent his childhood. Woodland insects and plants are recurring motifs in his work, with his bumble bee and dragonfly pendants enjoying particular popularity on the celebrity circuit. As well as an affordable range of gold and silver-plated pieces, there is also the Goldcrest line of fine jewelry featuring precious pure metals and gemstones. Rings delicately carved into the texture of twigs and bearing gemstones or tiny animals like a prowling fox, a mouse in a teacup or birds in a nest are just a few examples of Monroe’s aesthetic. Everything is so delicate each can easily be worn as a statement piece on its own. The store itself, located in London’s up-and-coming Bermondsey area, is a shrine to the artist’s work, with taxidermied birds and ivy leaves strewn about alongside curios like globes, hourglasses, old books and bowls of fruit, as if one has stumbled into an abandoned, overgrown drawing room. Rather than locked away in plain glass cabinets, the jewelry is displayed in old-fashioned vanity cases, threaded through upside down flowerpots and strewn across small branches, giving everything a wonderfully haphazard yet magical air.Show lessRead more
