A Portuguese Love Affair

As anyone in London will tell you, A Portuguese Love Affair, “Does exactly what it says on the tin.” Dedicated to Portuguese produce and exports, this Columbia Road outfit was set up by Olga Cruchinho and Dina Martins as a love letter to their home country. After originally hoping to start a Portuguese tapas bar here, the pair realized that their fondness for the products of their childhoods and their country’s artisanal industry could be transferred into a business. Opened in August 2013, A Portuguese Love Affair makes for an exotic shopping destination. With its wooden drums, dolls and trucks, and tall stacks of beautiful tinned fish it is part Oporto toyshop and part Lisbon grocer. And with its small range of East London-inspired clothing it is, well, very East London. Anybody well acquainted with Portugal is likely to recognize the products here - many of them have been everyday staples for decades. But those unfamiliar with the country will be just as charmed by the likes of illustrated sardine tins, Couto toothpaste, cork salt and pepper pots and handmade soaps. After falling in love with London, “[We] decided to bring Portugal here,” say the owners. Now it’s London’s turn to reciprocate the love. Show lessRead more
