Shakespeare & Sons

After ten years of selling English and French books in Prague and Cesky Krumlov, Roman Kratochvila opened a third branch of Shakespeare and Sons in Berlin in 2011. "We offer an ever growing collection of new and used books of every genre – from comics, to fiction, to philosophy, to children’s books", says Kratochvila. If he does not have a book in stock, he will almost certainly find it for you – even if it is out of print. Furthermore the store offers an exchange of used books and holds a very well appointed French section. Situated in the generous premises of a former chocolate factory, sofas and lounge chairs invite bibliophiles to hang out and read. In charge to feed the hungry minds is Kratochvila’s American wife Laurel. Her homemade cakes, muffins, sandwiches and freshly brewed coffee make this bookstore a great destination for every day.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
