Saint George's

When living in London got too much for him, photographer Paul Gurner took time off and came to Berlin to learn German. He enjoyed the relaxed way of living in the German capital so much so that he decided to stay. In 2003, he opened Saint George’s, an English language bookshop. Aside from new and used books the shop also sells a fine selection of magazines such as The New York Review of Books and The New Yorker. Saint George’s offers big sections on German history, European translations and is particularly strong on philosophy. Gurner is proud of the store’s fast turnover - his faithful customers visit regularly to hunt for books that had not been there the week before. Saint George’s also buys used books at fair prices. For Gurner, running a bookshop is not all about profit. He is driven by a passion for the written word. „We are here to be helpful“, he says, which means that he and his staff make it their mission to find books customers desire. With only the customer’s interests at heart, that could even mean sending them to a competitor in case Saint George’s is unable to deliver. Once a month the shop hosts readings of upcoming writers and poets.Show lessRead more
