Maybe you love licorice, maybe you think you don't. Our advice is, do not make up your mind before visiting kadó in Berlin's welcoming Graefekiez neighbourhood. On the wall of the shop hangs a poster which was published by Die Zeit magazine in cooperation with the store's owner, Ilsa Boge. It serves as a visual aid, depicting the fascinatingly many ways this so-called black gold is enjoyed across Europe. Boge grew up in the Netherlands where Licorice is very popular and was surprised that when she moved to Berlin it was pretty hard to find. In 1997 she set up shop to offer Berliners a chance to sample the myriad varieties from salty to sweet, hard to soft, flavored with ginger, salmiak, chocolate, or mint. You will find every possible type of licorice at kadó's retro-styled store – from beautifully illustrated, pocket-sized tins of hard candies, to chocolates filled with licorice, fine liqueurs, assorted teas, sprinkles, powders and row upon row of glass jars filled with enticing dark treats. With kadó's expert advice you're sure to find something new and delicious to try.Show lessRead more
