It's impossible to separate the development of the electronic music scene in Berlin from the history of Hard Wax. Opened in 1989 by Mark Ernestus of electronic dub act Rhythm & Sound and record label Basic Channel, the store forged links with the early Chicago House and Detroit Techno scenes bringing imports of these new sounds to Europe's dance music pioneers. Just behind the popular canal-side location along Paul-Lincke-Ufer, you follow a trail of signs, stickers, posters and graffiti tags to the third floor of an old red brick building to discover this stripped back, industrial-chic heaven for electronic music connoisseurs. Store manager Michael Hain explains that many of Berlin's well known techno artists cut their teeth behind the counter of this shop but as their careers take flight the faces of the staff change. The constant connection with international producers and DJs means that Hard Wax will bring you right up to date with what's exciting in dance music right now, whether it's on 12” vinyl, CD or digital format.Show lessRead more
