Freitag has come a long way since two Zurich-based graphic designers created a messenger bag from colorful truck tarpaulin to transport their designs about town. That was in 1993, and sixteen years later Freitag opened their fifth store in a former dye factory in Berlin Mitte. The beautiful antique glazed tiles lining the walls of the lower ground floor and the industrial metal staircases serve as evidence of the building’s past. Shelves are stacked high with every variation of bag the brand offers. Here you can browse the full range of accessories such as iPhone covers and laptop sleeves. The tarpaulin material, details like colorblocking, lettering and even photographic prints, takes on a beautiful sheen through weathering, making each product unique. The exhibition space at the rear of the store showcases the aptly named "Reference line" of bags designed with the writer in mind - picture a display of monochromatic bags cut from 10-year aged sections of tarpaulin, set against a writer’s desk with stacks of papers.  With eleven stores worldwide and a huge following, Freitag is a great example of how far good independent design can travel.Show lessRead more
