Sometimes it pays to wander off the beaten track, where some of the most interesting finds can be one left turn off a main thoroughfare. This is the case for AURA, a sumptuous kimono boutique located in Berlin’s hippest vintage district, Neukoelln. Founded in 2012 by Amundra Gantoemoer, who became inspired by a kimono that a friend brought back as a gift from Japan, AURA showcases vintage kimonos dating from the 1920s to 1980s - all sourced from rural Japanese provinces and featuring unique backstories. Gantoemoer pairs these high-quality vintage pieces with a “modern twist,” like Suzanna Kuhlemann’s 1940s-inspired swimwear collection, and other items by young contemporary designers. Wishing to steer away from stuffy, traditional modes of Japanese ceremonial attire, Gantoemoer instead recommends pairing the kimonos with leather bags and trainers. Her customers, who range from fashion designers and stylists to basketball players, film stars and singers, often spend hours trying on a selection of kimonos in order to find their perfect match.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
