Achingly hip neighborhood Sant Antoni is the stomping ground du jour of design nerds and lovers of recycled miscellanea, which is exactly why you’ll find the chic interior design shop, Valnot, here. Even the exterior hints at a pared-down design aesthetic that is at once elegant, graceful and hugely popular these days, largely in thanks to the eco-conscious, individual tastes of Barcelona’s residents. Tired of mass-produced Ikea products, the undeniable flavor and personality that accompanies unique, retro design and décor is a breath of fresh air here. “I rely on a philosophy of sustainability and recycling, reusing parts of forgotten objects, to create unique pieces with personality,” says David Castellet, whose background in Interior Design and love of Nordic culture originally led him to conceive of Valnot – one of his favorite materials, translated as Walnut from Swedish. Both a collector and furniture restorer, Castellet uses instinct to guide the design of his pieces and opens his workshop to the clients themselves, “I invite customers to come and create the piece with their own hands because it should be a fun, therapeutic and relaxing experience." The textures are distinctly Nordic: earthy and unpretentious hand-blown glasses sit next to delicate boat models on wooden seventies bookshelves or tables, evocative of a sophisticated rural cabin.Show lessRead more
