Sabater Hermanos

If you're seeking sanctuary from the tourist masses of the Barri Gòtic, you can usually find respite on the tranquil Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. You can also find some amazing soap. Located on this charming little square, Sabater Hermanos is a family-run soap shop in its third generation. The business was started by Sebastián Sabater in Buenos Aires in 1937. After Argentina's economic crises peaked in 2001, Sebastián's granddaughter, Eliana, decided to make the move to Barcelona. It took Eliana a while to find an adequate location for a store, but she eventually discovered the old printing house that become Sabater Hermanos's new home. There are over 40 different soaps on offer, available in diverse shapes and with fragrances like chocolate, lemongrass, almond, cherry, old lavender, green tea, tea rose, pomelo, jasmine, mandarine and honey. The soaps, made from coconut and palm kernel oil, are all produced in Barcelona. Incredibly, Eliana still uses her grandfather's original soap-making machines. We were especially taken with the Soap Petals: small slivers of soap made to resemble flower pedals, where the idea is that you use one petal every time you wash your hands. Lest any Argentina-philes should lament that Barcelona's gain came at B.A.'s loss, we can reassure you that Sabater Hermanos still has a store in the Palermo barrio of Buenos Aires.Show lessRead more
