Norman Vilalta

Discreetly tucked away in the leafy boulevards of the sophisticated Eixample district, this understated traditional workshop and showroom is one of the very few bespoke shoe designers of the city. Argentinian born Vilalta started his professional career as a lawyer, only satisfying his desire for creative, hands-on work in the form of weekly evening classes in footwear design. Little did he know that his new-found hobby would spark a journey to the age-old workshops of Florence to train in methods that remain unchanged after hundreds of years. Working under the apprenticeship of world-famous shoe-maker Stefano Bemer, he realized that this was his true calling, leading him to start his own label in Barcelona. His philosophy, that "everyone wants something that is theirs, and only theirs," means that each and every shoe is designed to the exact measurements of each individual, with endless fittings "taking into account both their personality and what the customer wants to say with their shoes." It means that no two pairs are ever made alike, and that Vilalta's creations are instantly recognizable. Vilalta continues to travel, sourcing the finest French leather in Normandy which he later tints and shapes himself with work-worn tools that have been around for over four generations. His bespoke footwear is a testament to the lasting power of traditional craftsmanship, carrying status as unique and creative masterpieces in their own right.Show lessRead more
