Mercat de Santa Caterina

Mercat Santa Caterina, located just off Via Laietana, one of Barcelona’s most important roads, has witnessed immense historical changes throughout the years. Not always a market, the ancient convent on this site was destroyed during riots in the nineteenth century and when the council approved a new market to be built in its place, the remnants of a Bronze Age monastery were discovered underground. Today these remains are proudly displayed and provide a fascinating glimpse into the very foundations of the city. The market itself is a showcase of twenty-first century produce. Small, family-run businesses are the order of the day here, specializing in every imaginable area of gastronomy, be they eggs, olive oil, spices or simple fruits and vegetables. Locally cured legs of jamón compete for attention with plump yellow, green and red tomatoes that sidle up to exotic imported fruits. Mediterranean seafood is hauled in fresh every morning, the sheer bounty of clacking shells and shimmering scales certain to delight even the most seasoned traveller. Next door, the famous “Cuines Santa Caterina” serves up straightforward, honest fare to hungry locals and tourists alike – proof that when produce is as fresh as this, dishes need little elaboration to taste delicious.Show lessRead more
