Colmado Múrria

From its original Art Deco storefront, artfully arranged window displays and owner Joan Boada’s encyclopedic knowledge, Colmado Múrria is clearly no ordinary family business. On the outside, an elegant woman cradles a monkey, proudly advertising the infamous ‘30s tipple of choice, Anis de Mono. This original Ramón Casas design garners a great deal of attention (even surviving the greedy clutches of art thieves) and forms part of the Ruta Modernista in Eixample. The interior of the shop, all wood-paneling and immaculate glass cabinets, boasts gourmet offerings almost as rare as the store itself. Not everyone can afford Azerbaijani Caviar at 6,000€ a kilogram or truffle-laced Gorgonzola at 380€, but the steady stream of visitors from every corner of the globe means that there is a healthy market for such indulgences. Of course, there are also plenty of inexpensive options for more economical foodies, too. Boasting an exhaustible selection of over 240 cheeses, cold cuts, wild jamón, embutidos, nuts, chocolate, coffee, turrón, wine, gourmet canned goods, cava and champagne, Joan works without intermediaries and knows his suppliers personally. Colmado Múrria stands apart from the crowd because it is based on traditional values that are as timeless as its modernist exterior.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide.
