Back in 1979, when Raval was better known as the Chinese quarter, Albert Padrol and his partner decided to open a small shop dedicated to their passion for travel and books. Moved by a bookshop they had once encountered near Notre Dame in Paris, they sought out distinctive and inspirational publications to fill the modest space. Over time they became well informed enough to expand their roster of travel books and soon had no other choice but to find a larger shop to house the ever-growing collection. Fast-forward to today and you can see their passion for travel literature certainly had wings. Now occupying a 1000 square meter space in the bustling Exiample district, Altaïr stocks over 60,000 publications organized by country and covering all aspects of travel. There is something for every imaginable audience here, from phrasebooks in Farsi and waterproof maps of Mount Everest to luxury travel guides to Miami and coffee-table photography tomes for the armchair traveller. Add to that Altaïr’s own magazine, covering topics as broad as Mayan culture and world-class railway journeys, and it is practically impossible not to find what you’re looking for here. Comfortable sofas are surrounded by maps and globes in the reading area, encouraging you to relax as you plan the trip you had always dreamed of taking with the world at your fingertips.Show lessRead more
