Farewell Books

You could easily float down East Cesar Chavez Street without noticing Farewell Books and its collective of friendly folk - its exterior façade blends in with the neighborhood, camouflaging the gems within. Formally known as Domy Books, the space functioned as a community bookshop and art gallery for years before the previous owner, with limited notice, decided to close it down. Mikaylah Bowman and Travis Kent, who were so invested in the space that they’d fallen in love with both it and each other, scrambled to find funding to secure the lease. They launched a successful Kickstarter, pooled their savings, and by the type of magic only seen in fairytales, pulled off a small miracle keeping the space alive. Integrating other local businesses including Sister Coffee, Las Cruxes and Vegan Nom, helped cover costs and boosted the community vibe. Today, Farewell Books functions as an unpretentious space for creatives to meet, think and talk. Though their focus remains on art, to complement their gallery space, they also carry fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, books on architecture and design, and both local and international magazines - all displayed like a well-curated Tumblr page. Farewell Books also hosts film screenings, book readings and exhibitions.Show lessRead more
