Original illustrated map of Camden, a borough of London, UK, inspired by the antique-style English County maps designed by the 19th century artist and engraver Thomas Moule.
All elements of the design, including the map, border and decoration has been entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured by the artist.
The map features design elements that reference the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The coat of arms at the top left of the image is the official arms of the borough (more information on which can be read on this page http://www.ngw.nl/int/gbr/c/camden.htm) and the smaller four shields reference heraldic symbols found on the coats of arms of Hampstead, St. Pancras and Holborn, the three former boroughs that merged to form the modern borough in 1965. The illustration at bottom left depicts the famous view from Primrose Hill towards Euston and Bloomsbury, whilst that at top right shows Kenwood House, near Highgate.
The chequered border decoration makes a number of references, in particular to the 2-Tone movement of the late 1970s and 80s made popular by local acts such as Madness and more recently by bands who regularly play venues around Camden Town. The compass design at the right also references badges that are found in abundance around the markets in Camden Town.
Neighbourhoods covered by the map include: Belsize Park, Bloomsbury, Camden Town, Chalk Farm, Dartmouth Park, Euston, Finchley Road, Fitzrovia, Gospel Oak, Hampstead, Highgate (south and west of the High Street), Holborn, Kentish Town, Kilburn (east of the High Road), King's Cross, Primrose Hill, St. Giles, St. Pancras, Somers Town, Swiss Cottage and West Hampstead.
