Review of Rudolf Scheer & Söhne in Vienna
The Scheer Shoe Manufacture represents seven generations of excellence in shoe-making, dating back to 1816. After winning a gold medal for its wares at the 1873 World's Fair, Scheer became the official shoemaker for the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878. Almost a century and a half later, Scheer is still producing custom-made shoes that are unbeatable in their craftsmanship and elegance. The leather from which these shoes are made is still stored in owner Markus Scheer's grandfather's old bedroom, and includes hundred-year-old samples of calfskin and crocodile hides. True to his family's business philosophy, Mr. Scheer believes that a shoemaker needs to know all of his customers personally. As a result, only 300-odd pairs are manufactured per year, each pair requiring a minimum of sixty hours to make. The process begins with a customer interview, followed by initial measurements and, later on, three fitting sessions. Such obsessive attention guarantees that every Scheer shoe will be a unique work of orthopedic perfection. Accessories like shoe-care sets, shoehorns and leather belts are also available. The fact that Scheer's interior hasn't changed much over the last one-hundred years, is a subtle reminder of this remarkable store's long history.
