Review of Giraffenland in Vienna
A few years ago, Tamara Drabek wanted to make clothes for her six-year-old son, Tassilo, but was frustrated by Vienna's lack of choice in contemporary, original fabrics. Tamaradidn't think every child should have to wear the same dull brand-name clothing, so she launched a website selling a wide range of unique textiles. Two years later, Tamara, a native of the 18th district, opened Giraffenland in the Währingerstrasse. Here, you will find fabric designs from all over the world, from Japan to the United States. Designers include the likes of Alexander Henry, with his fondness for an elegantly macabre calavera motif, to Michael Miller who does everything from polka dots to floral rococo. One cannot claim that Giraffenland's customers belong to a particular age group; this store is just as popular with young clothing designers as it is with senior citizens who want to make something for their grandkids. For those who don't consider themselves master seamstresses, Tamara organizes sewing workshops twice a week.
