Review of O. Ottomanelli & Sons in New York
O. Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meat Market has been a West Village staple since the 1940s, and the four native New York brothers who run it have been there just as long. The sons consider themselves the third generation of Ottomanelli butchers, the second being their father who opened the shop and the first their grandmother, who is still running a store in Bari, Italy. All the meat they sell is hand-selected by Frank, who goes to the market before sunrise five days a week like he has for decades. Ottomanelli & Son’s also specializes in wild game selected by brother Jerry, nicknamed “The Game Warden.” You’d be hard-pressed to ask for something the brothers don’t have, but they’re always happy to special-order, particularly around the holidays. So you can buy a ticket to Italy or you can buy subway fare, either way you’ll be getting great products and knowledgeable service with a good helping of old-fashioned Ottomanelli family charm—just don’t tell Frank you’re not a Giants fan.
