REVIEW
A decade ago, the Brazilian sibling team of Mauro and Angelica Gomes established what has since become one of New York’s most lauded names in floral design: Angelica. A quick glance at the Gomes’ extensive list of notable clients reveals arrangements done for television shows, print media, major corporations and non-profits, and even fashion designers. Approaching the Hudson Street shop, the outward appearance is deceptively traditional with a display of hardy plants more akin to a small town florist than a stylish, urban trendsetter. Inside, however, the showroom echoes the Gomes’ unique sensibility. Many of the arrangements and bouquets exude dense explosions of color and texture. Customization is also a welcomed option. What’s more, extraneous greenery is never used at Angelica—the arrangements are purely composed of flowers, including some rare, temperamental varieties. Flowering plants are stocked year round and fresh shipments from the Netherlands—the source of 90 percent of their stock—arrive every week.
